Red Desert

A haiku made during the last week of my tutorial services in Riyadh.

Nine months ago, from the moment I stepped off the plane at King Khaled Airport in Riyadh, I knew my life would experience profound change. I slipped on my new Abaya which I brought with me. The sight of women who were fully veiled was slightly unsettling, although I have an understanding of the religious beliefs that dictates the practice. The reality, however is not what I have imagined.

Then the climate is another factor to contend with. The summer temperature can skyrocket from 40-50 degrees Celsius and the winds that blow through the city are often accompanied by a haze of sand.

The good news here is, I survived.

In retrospect, I am privileged to have been able to enter the magic Kingdom. It has a fascinating culture to observe, despite the challenges.. I have work, I did save for my children and I made friends with the locals too, who happens to be my co-teachers. It is also a great experience to explore the middle east.

Until my next haiku!
